…Oh the childhood memories, years ago my dad and I decided to get into goats together and those goats were my all time favorite pets growing up. I showed and took them on walks around the block (with no leads) and spent just about any chance I could get during summer laying out in the pasture with them. My beloved pygmys stayed with us until each one crossed the rainbow bridge.
Flash forward to 2022, my fiancé and I bought a little piece of property to start a homestead. He always wanted goats and I already had the experience. At first my plan was to get a couple milk goats in which I knew I wanted Nigerian Dwarfs because they were like pygmys but had better milk production. However, I never thought I’d own an actual buck but I saw Night Heron Farm Solar Flare and fell in love.
We now run a small scaled ADGA registered herd where we milk daily, enjoy their creamy milk and silly personalities. My focus here is quality over quantity and have been focusing on temperaments, bettering the breed to the best of our knowledge and learning from all our fellow goat friends. One of our goals is to prove our stock over time, we are working with a colorful herd (that just happened that way) and polled (naturally hornless) genetics. Our herd is tested annually for CAE, CL and Johnes. (Negative since we started testing 2023). We participate in Linear Appraisal and will continue to do so when they come to our area and this coming spring 2026 we will be starting milk testing (DHI).
As my dad would say, “What have I started?” Haha! Because he is responsible for the love I have for goats!
